Explain the project and its timing
Describe the business, customers, trading history and intended use of financing. A tourism supplier, food processor or small manufacturer should identify when it buys inputs, delivers services and collects payment. Separate contracted sales from expected demand and explain what happens in the quieter months.
As a fictional example, JMD 1,800,000 for equipment, JMD 800,000 for stock and JMD 400,000 for setup and liquidity total JMD 3,000,000. A documented JMD 750,000 owner contribution leaves JMD 2,250,000 to finance before further costs. Confirm quotations, taxes and fees instead of treating these example amounts as a borrowing offer.
Prepare consistent supporting records
- Business registration, ownership and identity records requested by the financial institution; relevant licences and permits.
- Financial statements or management accounts, tax records as requested, bank statements and sales evidence for matching periods.
- Existing debt schedules, supplier quotations, contracts, proposed use of funds and evidence of the owner contribution.
- A monthly JMD cash forecast covering high and low seasons, with repayment dates and a downside case.
- Details of proposed collateral or guarantors, where requested, and the questions to resolve before making a commitment.
Confirm the exact list and accepted formats with the selected institution. Avoid assuming that one development programme’s conditions apply to all Jamaican SME loans.
Test seasonality and currency exposure
Starting with JMD 600,000, customer receipts of JMD 1,500,000, operating payments of JMD 1,100,000 and debt payments of JMD 250,000 gives JMD 750,000 closing cash. If receipts fall by 20%, closing cash becomes JMD 450,000. The business has then consumed JMD 150,000 of its opening reserve.
The debt payment is a separate illustration, not a calculated instalment for the financing example. Add actual tax, investment and repayment dates. If inputs or borrowing are denominated in USD while sales are in JMD, test that exposure separately: the simple receipts-and-costs tool below does not calculate an exchange-rate shock.
Distinguish a guarantee from a loan
The Development Bank of Jamaica’s Credit Enhancement Facility is a partial loan-guarantee mechanism. Its official guidance directs eligible applicants through participating financial institutions. The institution assesses the loan and may request the guarantee; it is not an automatic cash grant paid to the applicant.
DBJ also describes lending through approved financial institutions. Ask the intermediary to identify the exact product, its current availability, total costs, repayment profile and security requirements. A programme ceiling is not a promise that your business will receive that amount.
Prepare the lender conversation
- What are the low-season receipts and the minimum cash reserve needed to keep trading?
- Does the repayment schedule fit the customer-payment cycle?
- Which product is being considered: loan, guarantee-supported loan, grant or advisory support?
- What fees, guarantees, insurance or currency exposures remain outside the example?
- Which records need independent review before a decision?
Use the enterprise assessment to structure the evidence. It does not establish access to DBJ programmes or replace the institution’s credit review.

Test one month’s cash flow in JMD
Editable fictional example. No amounts are stored or transmitted. Closing cash = opening cash + receipts − operating payments − debt payments. Debt payments are entered, not calculated from a loan amount.
This model does not cover multiple months, or fees, tax and FX effects that you have not included. A positive closing balance can still conceal depletion of reserves.
